Surviving (and Cherishing) Your First Night at Home with Baby

Bringing your baby home from the hospital is a milestone filled with joy, relief… and a touch of panic! That first night can feel like the longest (and most emotional) of your life. Don’t worry—you’re not alone in feeling this way. Here’s what to expect and how to make the first night at home with your baby as smooth as possible.

Expect a Lack of Sleep

Your baby is adjusting to their new world—and that means frequent waking for feeds, cuddles, and comfort. Remind yourself: this is normal.

Create a Calm, Cosy Space

Keep baby’s sleeping area simple, safe, and ready. Having essentials close by—nappies, wipes, baby grows—saves stress in the middle of the night.

Share the Load

If you have a partner, take turns with feeds (if not breastfeeding), nappy changes, and soothing. Even a short nap in between makes a huge difference. Even for breastfeeding mamas, your partner can still share the load of things that need to be done around a feed, such as burping, changing nappy etc.

Give Yourself Grace

Tears (yours and baby’s!) are normal. The first night is a huge adjustment, so don’t expect perfection. It’s about surviving and learning together.

A Little Preparation Helps

Having your hospital bag unpacked, freezer meals ready, and a few newborn must-haves organised can give you breathing space to focus on bonding. Again...this is something that can be delegated while you have your hands full with the newest family member!

💛 Remember: that first night may feel overwhelming, but it’s also the start of countless precious moments with your little one.
