SUPPORTING IRISH WOMEN SINCE 2017

If someone close to you is starting chemotherapy, you may be unsure what to say or do. You want to be there for them—but the experience can feel unfamiliar and emotional from the sidelines too.
Here’s a compassionate guide to help you understand what they may be going through—and how you can truly support them.
WHAT THEY MIGHT EXPERIENCE
1. Physical Side Effects
Chemo can cause fatigue, nausea, hair loss, mouth sores, and increased sensitivity to cold or smells. Side effects vary depending on the medication and the individual.
2. Emotional Ups and Downs
Even the most positive people can experience anxiety, sadness, frustration or numbness during treatment.
3. Changes in Routine
Hospital appointments, rest days and recovery periods will often replace their usual schedule. Energy levels can fluctuate a lot from day to day.
4. Isolation
Because of compromised immunity or fatigue, they might not feel up to socialising—even when they’d love the company.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THEM
1. Be a consistent presence
Send short messages, check in gently, and show up—without expecting replies or deep chats every time.
2. Offer practical help
Run errands, cook a meal, walk the dog, take the kids or collect prescriptions. Be specific: “I’m going to the shops—what can I get you?”
3. Respect their energy
Let them set the pace. Even sitting in silence can be a comfort on the tough days.
4. Send small comforts
A warm blanket, herbal tea, unscented moisturiser or a thoughtful care pack shows love without overwhelming them.
5. Be patient with their process
Everyone handles illness differently. Your role isn’t to fix—it’s to gently walk alongside them.
