5 Signs Your Child Is Close to Starting Their First Period (and How to Support Them)

You might remember your own first period, but supporting your child through theirs can feel like uncharted territory.

So how can you tell when it’s getting close? And more importantly, how do you start the conversation in a way that feels natural and supportive?

Here are 5 signs that your child may be approaching their first period, and how you can gently help them prepare.

1.They’re Around Age 10–14

Most girls in Ireland start their period between ages 10 and 14, though it can vary. If your child is within this range and going through other changes, their first period might not be far off.

2.Breast Development Has Started

Breast buds (small, firm bumps under the nipples) often appear 1–2 years before menstruation begins.

3.They’re Experiencing Vaginal Discharge

This is one of the most common signs. If your child mentions dampness in their underwear or starts wearing panty liners, it’s often a sign that periods are on the horizon.

4.They’ve Started Pubic or Underarm Hair Growth

This typically comes alongside other signs of puberty and can be another clue that periods aren’t far away.

5.Mood Swings or Cramps

Hormonal shifts can bring mood changes or even mild cramps before the first period arrives. If they’re complaining of sore tummies, it might not just be a bug.
