You’ve welcomed your baby into the world. The hard part’s over, right?!
Well… kind of. The first night in hospital with your newborn is a magical, emotional, sometimes overwhelming experience. And while no two nights are exactly the same, knowing what to expect can make it all feel a little easier.
Here’s what no one tells you about those first few hours and how to prepare for them.
1.It Might Not Be Peaceful and Quiet
You might imagine bonding quietly with your baby while everyone else sleeps. But maternity wards can be busy places: midwives checking on patients, babies crying, trolleys rattling past. Pack earplugs and an eye mask just in case, and don’t be surprised if you don’t get much sleep.
2.You’ll Feel a Mix of Emotions
Joy, exhaustion, relief, anxiety, sometimes all at once. This emotional rollercoaster is completely normal. Let yourself feel it all, and try not to judge yourself for any of it.
3.You Might Need More Help Than You Think
Feeding your baby for the first time (whether breastfeeding or bottle feeding) can take some trial and error. Don’t hesitate to ask for support. Midwives are there to help, especially during those first few feeds.
4.It’s Okay to Feel Overwhelmed
Even if this isn’t your first baby, the first night can feel like a lot. Don’t put pressure on yourself to “have it all together.” You’re doing something amazing.
5.Comfort Items Matter
A cosy dressing gown, soft blanket, your favourite lip balm, these little things can make a big difference when you’re far from home and running on adrenaline.
