Bringing home a new baby is a huge change for everyone, especially your older children.
Whether they’re toddlers or school-aged, it’s completely normal for siblings to feel uncertain or even jealous. But with a few simple strategies, you can help them feel included and important in their new role.
1.Involve Them in Baby Prep
Let them help pack the baby’s hospital bag or choose a soft toy for their sibling. Making them part of the process gives them a sense of ownership and excitement.
2.Give Them a “Big Sibling” Gift
A small gift “from the baby” can help smooth the transition and make them feel celebrated. It could be a book, toy, or special outfit.
3.Set Aside One-on-One Time
Even just 10–15 minutes a day with undivided attention can make a huge difference. Talk about their day, play their favourite game, remind them they’re still just as important.
4.Let Them Help (In Safe, Small Ways)
Ask them to fetch a nappy or help choose a baby outfit. These little tasks help them feel useful and connected.
5.Talk Openly About Feelings
Let them know it’s okay to feel happy and a little unsure. Books about becoming a big brother or sister can help open the conversation.
U L L U V T I P: Some parents even pack a surprise “sibling gift” in their hospital bag to give at the first meeting. It’s a lovely way to ease introductions.
