How to Prepare Your Daughter for Her First Period: A Parent’s Guide

Your daughter’s first period is a big milestone, and how it’s handled can shape how she feels about her body and menstruation for years to come.

At Ulluv, we believe this moment should be met with warmth, honesty, and kindness. Whether she’s 9 or 14, here’s some guidance on how to prepare your daughter for her first period in a positive, practical way.

1. Start the Conversation Early

It doesn’t need to be a big sit-down chat. Look for natural opportunities to mention periods in everyday life. Focus on reassurance: “Everyone goes through this. You’re not alone.”

2. Normalise the Experience

Talk about symptoms like cramps, mood swings, and flow in a matter-of-fact way. You’re helping her build confidence and body awareness.

3. Have a First Period Kit Ready

Being prepared makes all the difference. Our Ulluv First Period Box includes:

  • Lil Let’s starter pack, which has a mix of pads and tampons to get her familiar with
  • A5 period tracker
  • A wet bag, to bring home any soiled undies
  • A couple of intimate wipes
  • Haan hand sanitiser
  • A gentle guide booklet with tips, reassurance, and info
  • A bar of Aunty Nellie’s chocolate

Having a kit ready (and packed with care) helps her feel calm and in control.

4. Stay Positive

Periods aren’t something to dread, they’re a sign her body is growing and working just as it should. Framing it positively helps her embrace the change without fear.

This is more than a milestone. It’s a moment of connection.
