What to Pack in Baby’s Going Home Outfit: A Newborn Essentials Guide

Leaving the hospital with your new baby is one of life’s most unforgettable moments. And while photos of adorable “going home” outfits flood social media, many new parents are left wondering…what does your baby actually need to wear for the journey home?

Here’s a gentle guide to help you pack the perfect going-home outfit, without overthinking it.

1. Think Layers

Newborns can’t regulate their body temperature well, so layering is key. A soft cotton vest, a sleepsuit, and a hat are a great start. Add a cardigan or light jacket depending on the weather.

2. Choose Soft, Easy-to-Dress Items

Babies are wiggly, and your little one will likely be sleepy and delicate post-birth. Look for envelope-neck vests and zip sleepsuits…they’re quicker to put on and gentle on baby’s skin.

3. Don’t Forget the Extras

Pack mittens, socks or booties, and a soft blanket. These small touches keep baby snug in the car seat and are ideal for photos too. Maybe even a cute little soft toy!

4. Dress for the Season

Heading home in warm summer weather? A lighter cotton outfit and sun hat will do. In winter? Add a warmer hat. And also a pram suit or footmuff, which are more practical than a thick snowsuit, as it easier to wrap baby up for the short time outside but also reduce the layers when in a warm car.

Ulluv Tip: Leave you and baby’s going home outfits together at home for your partner to bring in on the day of discharge. Check out our gorgeous “Baby’s Going Home Outfit” recycled cotton pouches, especially for keeping their outfit safe and easy to find!
