Tips for a Smooth Hospital Discharge with Your Baby

The moment you leave the hospital with your newborn baby is one you’ll remember forever. It’s exciting, emotional—and sometimes, a little overwhelming. Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your family, preparing for hospital discharge can make all the difference in feeling calm, confident, and ready for your baby’s first day at home.

Here are our top tips to make your hospital discharge with your baby as smooth and stress-free as possible:

1. Know your hospital’s discharge process

Every maternity hospital has its own routine, so before the big day arrives, ask your midwife or care team what to expect. Some hospitals discharge mums and babies within 24–48 hours, while others may keep you longer depending on your delivery and how you're both doing.

Ask:

  • What time of day are discharges typically done?

  • Will baby need any checks (like hearing or heel prick tests) before leaving?

  • What paperwork or forms will need to be signed?

Having this information in advance will help you plan better and avoid last-minute surprises.

2. Pack your bags with discharge day in mind

Our pre-packed maternity hospital bags make all of the hospital packing a breeze. But whether you’re using an Ulluv bag or your own go-to bag, make sure you’ve packed:

  • A going-home outfit for baby (something soft, warm and easy to fasten)

  • Your own comfy outfit that’s loose, breathable and C-section–friendly if needed

  • Essential toiletries to freshen up before the journey home

  • Baby blanket for extra warmth—our beautiful heart design aerated baby blankets in sand are pretty and safe!

  • Any paperwork or documents your hospital might need you to bring or fill out

3. Check your car seat setup

Before discharge day, ensure your car seat is correctly installed. Many hospitals require a safe car seat to release your baby, especially for first-time parents. Practice using it in advance and know how to secure your newborn properly. A cosy baby blanket or muslin burp cloths can help support baby’s head and keep them snug on the journey.

4. Don’t rush—take your time

Even though you may be eager to get home, allow yourself time to breathe. Hospital discharge can be a flurry of activity, from check-ups and final paperwork to packing your things and saying thank you to the midwives. Having everything neatly packed and organised in our hospital bag sets—especially with packing pods—can help avoid that frantic feeling.

And remember to snap a photo or two of your baby's going-home moment. These tiny milestones are magical. Our "Yippee, I'm Going Home Today" disc (also available as Gaeilge!) are perfect for this moment.

5. Say a heartfelt thank you

Many parents like to leave a little token of thanks for the incredible care team that helped them through birth. A simple card can mean the world. Our Midwife Thank You Cards and NICU Nurse Greeting Cards are thoughtful and heartfelt, especially if your journey involved extra care or challenges.

6. Be kind to yourself

Leaving the hospital can bring a swirl of emotions—relief, joy, nerves, and even a touch of fear. That’s all normal. You’re stepping into a new chapter, and you don’t need to have all the answers on day one. You’ve got this, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
