While packing your hospital task is enough of a difficult task in itself, the luggage you choose can make all the difference and either make it harder than it needs to be...or much easier. And that's not even taking into account the ease of finding items when you are in hospital if you choose the right luggage! So, read on to discover why bringing a small labour tote plus two smaller bags (instead of one big suitcase) makes life easier during labour, delivery, and recovery.
Packing your hospital bag is one of those tasks that makes everything feel real—but the type of bag you bring matters just as much as what’s inside it. While some parents lean toward one big suitcase, in reality it’s far more practical to use a small tote/backpack for labour and two smaller holdalls for everything else. Here’s why this method works so well.
A small tote or backpack is perfect for your labour must-haves—think nightdress, phone charger, birth plan, hair ties, lip balm, and snacks. This bag can stay by your side in the delivery room, while your other bags are tucked away until later.
When you need something quickly during labour, you don’t want your partner rummaging through a giant suitcase. Having a neat labour tote plus two clearly organised holdalls makes it simple to grab exactly what you need, stress-free.
Hospital rooms and wards can be cramped. A big suitcase is bulky and awkward, while two smaller holdalls slip neatly under a bed or into a corner—leaving more room for you, baby, and visitors.
Think of your packing this way:
Labour Tote/Backpack: Birth room essentials.
Bag One: Mum’s recovery needs (toiletries, maternity pads, comfy clothes).
Bag Two: Baby’s items (nappies, sleepsuits, blankets).
This clear separation means less digging around and more calm during what’s already an intense time.
A big suitcase is heavy, awkward, and not ideal when you or your partner are juggling car seats and other baby gear. Smaller bags are easier to carry and share between you.
If you’re kept in hospital a few days, your partner can easily bring one bag home or swap things out—something that’s much harder if everything is crammed into one giant case.
