What to Say (and Not Say) to Someone Battling Illness

When a loved one is facing a serious illness, you want to be supportive – but finding the right words can be hard. I know this first-hand. In 2019, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and during that time, I learned how powerful the right words can be.

Here’s a simple guide that reflects both my personal experience and the thoughtful support Ulluv aims to offer:

What to Say:

  • “I’m thinking of you every day.”

  • “I’m here if you want to talk – or not talk.”

  • “You don’t have to go through this alone.”

  • “You’re so strong, even when you don’t feel it.”

What Not to Say:

  • “Everything happens for a reason.”

  • “At least it’s not worse.”

  • “I know exactly how you feel.”

  • "Try to stay positive"

You don’t have to have the perfect words. What truly matters is your presence and your willingness to simply be there. A simple card from our Difficult Times range, or a Message of Hope flash card pack, can offer meaningful comfort and encouragement when words are hard to find.

If someone you care about is walking a difficult path, offering to take their kids for an afternoon (or overnight) is like winning the lotto. Sending ready or homemade meals offers amazing, practical help and comfort. In fact, just showing up with kindness and honesty makes more of a difference than you know.
