What to Pack in Your Baby’s Going Home Outfit (and When to Use It)

Bringing your baby home from the hospital is one of the most emotional moments in your journey—and choosing their first going-home outfit is part of the fun.

But what exactly should you pack? And when will they wear it?

Let’s walk through the essentials.

What Is a "Going Home Outfit"?

It’s the outfit your baby will wear when you leave the hospital to go home. It’s often the first thing they wear outside—and for many families, it becomes a treasured keepsake.

What to Pack for Baby’s Going Home Outfit:

1. A Soft, Comfortable Babygrow

Choose cotton or bamboo material for breathability and comfort. Zippers or poppers are fine, just avoid anything scratchy or complicated.

2. A Cosy Hat

Newborns lose heat quickly. A soft cotton hat helps regulate their temperature, especially outdoors.

3. Scratch Mitts or Built-In Cuffs

Those tiny nails are surprisingly sharp! Mitts help prevent accidental scratches. Babygrows with built in mitts are super-handy as they can't lose them!

4. Cardigan or Jacket (Weather Dependent)

If it’s chilly or windy, layer up with a soft cardigan or a lightweight newborn jacket.

5. Blanket or Snowsuit for Winter

A soft fleece blanket is perfect for most Irish seasons. In colder months, consider a newborn-friendly snowsuit for the journey.

Pro Packing Tip:

Keep the going-home outfit in a labelled packing pod or clear zip bag, so it’s easy to grab when it’s time to head out. Check out our gorgeous recycled cotton "Baby's Going Home Outfit" pouch, which was designed specifically for this purpose.
