How to Stay Comfortable During Early Labour: 7 Practical Tips

f you're in the early stages of labour, you might feel both excited and uncertain about what’s coming next. The good news? Many women spend the beginning of labour at home and there’s plenty you can do to stay calm and comfortable before it’s time to go to the hospital.

Here are 7 practical ways to make early labour more manageable:

1. Create a Peaceful Space

Dim the lights, play calming music or ambient sounds, and try to make your surroundings feel cosy and relaxed. Light a candle if you can (just not too close to anything flammable!) or diffuse lavender essential oil.

2. Stay Mobile

Gentle movement can help ease contractions and keep things progressing. Walk around, sway your hips, or try bouncing on a birthing ball to stay active without overexerting yourself.

3. Use Heat and Water

A warm bath or hot water bottle can soothe back pain and muscle tension. If you have access to a birthing pool or deep bath, early labour is a great time to use it.

4. Hydrate and Snack Wisely

Labour is physical work. Sip water and choose light, energy-boosting snacks like bananas, toast, or yoghurt to keep your strength up without upsetting your stomach.

5. Practise Breathing Techniques

Use slow, steady breathing to help manage discomfort and stay grounded. Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, exhale through your mouth for 6. Apps like Freya or Calm Birth can help guide you.

6. Don’t Clock-Watch Too Much

It’s tempting to time every contraction—but try to stay focused on how you feel, not just the numbers. Let your partner or support person track timings so you can focus on resting and staying present.

7. Have Your Hospital Bag Ready

One less thing to worry about when it’s time to go! Having your hospital bag packed and by the door helps you feel mentally and practically prepared.
