What to Expect Emotionally During Your First Period (And How to Talk About It)

The first period (or menarche) is a major milestone, and not just physically. For many girls, it brings a swirl of emotions: curiosity, excitement, confusion, maybe even fear.

Here’s how to support the emotional side of starting a period:

1. Normalise, Don’t Dramatise

Treat periods as natural, not something to be hidden or whispered about. This builds confidence.

2. Acknowledge the Mixed Feelings

It’s okay for her to feel proud and nervous. Let her know there’s no “right” way to feel.

3. Create a Private, Safe Space to Ask Questions

Answer with honesty, not embarrassment. If she’s too shy to ask out loud, try writing things down.

4. Celebrate the Milestone Gently

A small card, note, or gift can make her feel seen and supported without making it a big performance.

5. Talk About PMS and Mood Changes

Help her recognise the emotional patterns of her cycle, and reassure her that she’s not “too emotional,” just learning about her body.
