IRELAND'S ORIGINAL & BEST HOSPITAL BAGS

Packing a hospital bag for birth can feel like one of the most important preparations you’ll ever do. You want to be ready for every scenario. Every comfort. Every “just in case.”
But after three babies, I learned something very quickly: I consistently packed way more than I ever used. And if you’re in that stage right now, you’re completely normal.
Here are the hospital bag items that stayed untouched every single time — despite my best intentions.
I always packed full haircare, skincare, and all the “I’ll feel human again” products. But hospital showers were:
Dry shampoo and a shower cap honestly did the job perfectly. And if you know, you know — the moment you’re in the shower, you suddenly hear phantom baby cries every 30 seconds. Or think that every baby cry is YOUR baby!
Simple is enough.
I packed so many tiny newborn mittens thinking they were essential. But most babygros already had built-in fold-over mitts, and they stayed on far better than the fiddly separate ones.
Lesson learned: check the clothing before you overpack extras.
This was one of my biggest overpacking habits. I thought I’d need different blankets for different moments or backups “just in case.” In reality? I used one blanket for the entire hospital stay. It became familiar, comforting, and stayed perfectly fine the whole time.
One good blanket is enough. And in fact many Irish hospitals actually provide blankets for the duration of your stay so you may not need one at all if you don't want to, just be sure to check with your local hospital first.
I genuinely thought I’d sit in hospital writing my birth story, reflecting on everything, and documenting those early newborn moments. Instead, I was:
The journal never even came out of the bag. A beautiful idea… just not realistic in those early days.
As a book lover, I fully believed I’d get through at least a few chapters. In reality, I had zero focus for reading. Instead, I:
Books stayed untouched every single time.
After three babies, the biggest takeaway is simple: You don’t need to pack for the “ideal” version of postpartum life. You need to pack for the real one. Those early hospital days are about:
Not productivity. Not self-improvement. Not catching up on books or journaling.
A well-packed hospital bag should feel:
