How to Cope When Your First Period Arrives Away from Home

Your first period is a big milestone—but if it happens when you’re not at home, it can feel scary or embarrassing. The good news? With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can handle it like a pro.

1. Stay Calm—You’ve Got This

The first thing to remember is that periods are a normal, healthy part of growing up. If you feel anxious, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that this happens to half the world’s population.

2. Find a Private Space

Whether you’re at school, at a friend’s house, or on holiday, excuse yourself to the bathroom to assess what you need and make yourself comfortable.

3. Use What’s Available

If you don’t have period products with you, ask a friend, teacher, or trusted adult—they’ll understand and be happy to help. In public bathrooms, you might find vending machines with pads or tampons. If you have nothing, just bunch up a large amount of toilet paper until you can get access to some period products.

4. Carry a ‘Just in Case’ Kit

Keeping a small pouch in your schoolbag or backpack with pads, wipes, and a spare pair of underwear means you’ll always be ready, no matter where you are. (This is exactly why we created our First Period Kit—so you never have to feel unprepared - check it out here.)

5. Deal with Stains Discreetly

If you notice a small leak, wrap your jumper or hoodie around your waist until you can change. Carrying a zip-lock bag in your kit is handy for storing soiled clothes until you get home.

6. Look After Yourself

Your first period can sometimes bring cramps, tiredness, or emotional changes. Drink water, have a snack, and if possible, rest when you get home.

Final Thought:
Having your first period away from home can feel daunting, but with the right preparation, you can feel confident and in control—no matter where you are.
