Hospital Bag Packing: What You Don’t Need to Bring

When you’re preparing for labour, it’s tempting to pack everything but the kitchen sink. But your hospital bag doesn’t need to be bursting! Here’s a list of common items you can skip, so you’re only carrying what truly matters.

1.Too Many Outfits

Baby doesn’t need a fashion show! 4-6 vests, babygrows, and a going-home outfit are plenty. If you are having a c-section, check the typical time you will be in hospital as you may need more. But you can always have a secondary supply of outfits ready at home just in case and save you having to pack too many in your hospital bag

2.Fancy Clothes for Mum

You’ll be in loose, comfy clothes for most of your stay. Nightdresses or pyjamas, a robe, and going-home outfit are all you really need. And again, to save space in your hospital bag, you can have your going home outfit waiting at home for your partner to bring in on the day you’re being discharged.

3.Full Makeup Bag

Some mums like a bit of mascara for post-birth photos, but you likely won’t use much else. A tinted moisturiser or lip balm will do the trick. That said, I am a firm believer that you pack what makes you feel yourself and if a full face of makeup is that, then go for it!

4.Breast Pump

Unless advised by your midwife or lactation consultant, you won’t need a pump in hospital. They’ll often have one available if needed but honestly, you’ll most likely be home from hospital before you’ll need one.

5.Hair Tools

A hairbrush and a few bobbins are enough. Most mums tie it up and keep things low-maintenance during their stay. But again, as with 3 above, if bringing your hair dryer and styling your hair nicely is what makes you feel better, do it!

6. Bathing items

Think about whether you want to give your baby their first bath in hospital and if not, you can leave out such items as baby towel, sponge etc. Again, this is a personal preference, but some health experts advise waiting a number of days or even weeks before bathing a newborn
