Baby’s First 48 Hours: What to Expect in Hospital After Birth

You’ve packed your hospital bag, read the birth books, and counted down to due day. But what happens after baby arrives? The first 48 hours can be a whirlwind of checks, cuddles, and learning the ropes as a new parent.

Here’s what most parents can expect in those early days in hospital:

1.Immediate Skin-to-Skin Contact

If all goes smoothly, you’ll likely be encouraged to hold your baby skin-to-skin straight after birth. This supports bonding, regulates baby’s temperature, and kickstarts breastfeeding (if that’s what you choose to do).

2.First Feed

Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, your care team will guide you through baby’s first feed. It may take time, just go gently and ask for help if needed.

3.Postnatal Checks for Mum & Baby

Both of you will be monitored. Baby will have Apgar scores taken, be weighed, and may receive vitamin K. You’ll be checked for bleeding, blood pressure, and signs of recovery.

4.Midwife Support

Expect hands-on help with feeding, changing nappies, and recognising baby’s cues. You’re not expected to know it all, this is your learning phase.

5.Visitors & Rest

Some hospitals limit visitors so mums can rest. Focus on recovery, and don’t feel guilty for setting boundaries (either in hospital or during those first few days and weeks at home)

6.Going Home Timing

Most hospitals discharge vaginal births within 24–48 hours if all is well. For C-sections, it may be a little longer. You’ll get guidance before going home.
